How it works: Cost per GJ = dollars per cube ÷ estimated GJ per cube. Moisture reduces the usable heat value of firewood.
Why Does Timing Matter?
Freshly processed firewood contains more moisture than fully seasoned wood. By purchasing your firewood ahead of winter and storing it in a dry, well-ventilated woodshed, nature does the hard work for you.
For example, firewood bought the Winter prior or early summer and stored correctly can naturally dry from Green 35-40% moisture content to 15% or 10% by the following autumn.
That reduction in moisture makes a huge difference.
- More of the wood’s energy is converted into usable heat.
- Fires burn hotter and more efficiently.
- Less energy is wasted evaporating water.
- You’ll produce less smoke and enjoy a cleaner burn.
The Cheapest Load Isn’t Always the Cheapest Heat
It’s easy to compare firewood by price alone, but purchase price only tells part of the story.
Two loads of wood may cost different amounts, but if one contains significantly more moisture, you’ll get less usable heat from every log you burn.
